Utah: transferring a plate to another person
Release, then buyer applies
How To Accomplish
Surrender + release of priority
Transfer permission is not necessarily permission to accept payment.
Confirm current requirements for your plate type with the issuing agency before proceeding.
Process, conditions, and sources
- Rule: When you sell the vehicle, you must immediately either move the plates to your own vehicle or surrender them and release priority to the configuration. The division won’t give a personalized plate to a new owner who doesn’t meet its eligibility requirements.
- Steps:
- Surrender the plate and release priority.
- The buyer applies for the configuration right away.
- Source: Available with Pro or Premium
Before arranging a transfer
- Confirm whether transfer to this recipient and payment are permitted.
- Ask which forms, fees, plate classes, and vehicle-transfer conditions apply.
- Confirm how the agency protects the requested configuration during the process.
- Get the agency’s instructions before releasing your rights or paying the other person.
